Last week our students got a chance to see how history and math intersect! We learned how ancient Egyptians used cubits (the length from the elbow to fingertips) and palms as measurements. Our module focuses on precise measurements, and after trying it out ourselves, we were able to discuss why there was a need for standard units (especially when we saw the differences in a second grader’s cubit vs. an adult!). We did see the wisdom in having benchmarks like this to make estimates, but the necessity to measure with a standardized tool for accuracy. It was one more way that second graders are order discoverers, noting God’s intentional design in math all around us. Here are some pictures of students measuring widths of their desks, windows, and doorways with these ancient units before using centimeters instead!
