Tabs FLEx: Camp OneStep

Image
The second graders had the privilege of launching their second FLEx project this year: supporting Camp OneStep, a camp for kids and families with cancer, by collecting tabs!  A volunteer from the camp, Kris Riley, came to visit our students and explain the work that Camp OneStep does. She expressed a need for a wagon at the camp to help transport little siblings, or young campers whose health issues impact their mobility.  Our second graders heard from her, asked lots of good questions, and then got to work as teammates to get the word out around school to collect tabs for this great cause. We also know that any tabs collected at home, church, or parents’ workplaces would be so helpful to meet our goal. We are proud of these students for allowing the love of Jesus to flow through them in this worthy effort. Here are pictures of the launch time!

Pine Haven Visit

One of our FLEx (Formational Learning Experience) projects this year is to focus on being good neighbors to our "Grandfriends" at Pine Haven, a retirement and assisted living community with multiple locations in our area. We first started by learning the story of when Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan. We learned that our neighbor can be anyone, not just those who live next door. We learned that Christ-like love means paying attention to those who can be easily overlooked or forgotten by others in our world. We asked the second graders, "What do you think we should do about it?"...and they got to work! We brainstormed ideas and they thought we should visit, start conversations, and play games with these Grandfriends. So, last week Wednesday, we did just that! We were V...

Creation Enjoyers

Image
We've started memorizing Psalm 8, noting how a sovereign, "majestic," and powerful creator loves us, is mindful of us, and cares for us. We never want to take that beautiful privilege for granted! We give honor back to God by noticing the intricacies of what He has made. Fall is such a perfect season and opportunity to enjoy this creation. We took a class of writing time to collect leaves, observe them closely, and write about their properties. What an amazing creator we serve!

Publishing Party

Earlier this quarter we had the opportunity to share our finished personal narratives! Students wrote a true story and revised it over time, adding details and craftsmanship along the way. We had a “publishing party” where students were able to read one another’s work and compliment an aspect of their writing! Here are some pictures from that sharing time.
